NR5 INTO OUTPOST
September 06 - March 07
‘NR5 into Outpost’ was a Fruitful
Arts led partnership with OUTPOST Gallery & The NR5 Project
aiming to re-engage young people with education through creative
practice.
14-16 yr olds identified as ‘at risk
of exclusion from school or anti social behaviour’ made
weekly visits to OUTPOST. They took part in a diverse range of
workshops, devised to facilitate real engagement with the exhibitions
and recognize individual strengths.
Several taster style sessions and active evaluation
techniques helped to identify participants favourite activities
and this helped to carve out a direction for a more ‘personal
challenge’.
Highly individual results included spraying
with stencils, watercolour, body casting, outsized sculptures,
photo-documentary, design for a CD sleeve and customising clothes.
The project culminated in the NR5 into OUTPOST
Exhibition, a public display of work in the gallery and so it
really belonged to the group for that day. They helped to hang
the exhibition, prepared refreshments and chatted with many visitors,
project workers, and the press about their art and their experiences.
Mandy & Tricia worked very closely with
NR5 tutor Emma Cameron and other project workers to support young
people with a Bronze Arts Award. 9 of the 12 Young people who
began the project gained the award those who went on to Year
11 are currently studying for their GCSE.
