CONCRETE CASTING AT BLYTH
JEX SCHOOL
March 2007
Yr 11 GCSE students used this 3 day mould making and concrete
casting workshop towards a 3D module of their GCSE.
Students made a wall based sculpture that reflected the various
study areas within the school. They sourced objects that pertained
to subjects such as Music, Art, Science sport and technology
and they used them to create negative impressions in a clay mould.
They learned how to prepare a strong effective mould, how to
mix and pour concrete and prepare the sculpture for mounting
on a wall. Drawing exercises supported the activity, we made
several studies of the objects using observation, memory, speed
drawing and frottage.
Students also had a chance to work closely with and chat to
Matthew Pitt an NSAD fine Art Student in his final year and Georgie
Manly, a recent NSAD Graduate about life as an art student.
